AC Milan Goalkeeper Maignan Alleges Racist Abuse from Verona Fans
During a Serie A match on Friday night, AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan reportedly informed referee Livio Marinelli about racist abuse he received from Verona fans at Stadio Bentegodi. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Maignan brought this to the referee’s attention following the conclusion of the game.
Journalists from the Italian sports newspaper present at the venue also claimed to have heard racist slurs coming from the stands during the match. This incident is not the first time Maignan has faced such abuse in Italian football. Last season, he was subjected to similar racist taunts during an away game against Udinese, which were so severe that Maignan temporarily left the field.
In this recent case, Maignan reportedly heard racist remarks in the second half of the game but waited until after the final whistle to report them to the match official. The French goalkeeper, who joined Milan from Lille in 2021, is currently in talks with the club to extend his contract beyond its current 2026 expiration date.
These recurring incidents highlight the ongoing issue of racism in football, particularly in Italian stadiums, and underscore the need for more effective measures to combat such behavior and protect players from discriminatory abuse.
