Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta believes his old club should take inspiration from Atalanta`s tactical approach to become competitive again following a challenging season.
Despite winning the Supercoppa Italiana in January, Milan`s 2024-25 campaign was largely disappointing. They lost the Coppa Italia final and failed to qualify for European competitions, leaving fans frustrated and demanding changes.
Costacurta, who won the Champions League five times with Milan, shared his thoughts on the team`s struggles and offered advice for the future. “I experienced finishing ninth and tenth in the league. It`s difficult, but it can happen,” he said. “What concerns me most is that Milan`s executives and players seemed to put in effort this year, yet results didn`t follow.”
The club legend emphasized the importance of selecting the right sporting director, stating, “They need someone who truly understands football.” He also suggested a change in playing style, proposing that Milan adopt a high-pressing approach similar to Atalanta`s.
“I`d like to see Milan pressing high up the pitch, both away and at home. I`m thinking of a Milan with the same style as Atalanta,” Costacurta explained. “This year, many things were missing for the Rossoneri, but above all, attitude.”
Atalanta`s success under manager Gian Piero Gasperini has been notable, with the team qualifying for the Champions League for the fifth time in seven years. Gasperini recently hinted at potentially extending his contract with the club, emphasizing his strong connection to Bergamo and Atalanta.
As Milan looks to rebuild and return to European competition, Costacurta`s suggestion to emulate Atalanta`s tactical approach could provide a blueprint for success in the coming seasons.
