Agent Criticizes RC Lens Coach for Benching Veteran Defender Jonathan Gradit
Jonathan Gradit, a 32-year-old defender for RC Lens, has seen his role diminish significantly this season under new head coach Will Still. Despite being a crucial part of the team’s three-man defense last year, Gradit has not played since November.
The shift to a four-man backline and the rise of young talent Abdukodir Khusanov have contributed to Gradit’s reduced playing time. Initially, it was believed that Gradit would serve as a valuable backup for Khusanov or Kevin Danso in case of injuries.
However, in a recent 1-0 loss to Toulouse FC, Gradit was left out of the lineup even with Khusanov and Facundo Medina unavailable. Coach Still opted for Malang Sarr instead, explaining it as a tactical decision based on the need for a left-footed defender to create specific passing angles.
This decision has not sat well with Gradit’s representatives. His agent, Stéphane Courbis, expressed frustration, stating, “It’s incomprehensible. Jonathan can play in a four-man defense. He was trained in this system. I don’t understand the management of a player like him, who is committed and devoted to the club, and who had the best start to the season of his career.”
The situation highlights the challenges faced by experienced players when new coaching strategies are implemented, potentially impacting their roles within the team.
