Allegri’s Milan: How He Might Utilize Leao, Reijnders, and Structure the Defense

Today’s Milan will be completely different from the Milan we will get to know starting in June, when the revolution conceived by CEO Giorgio Furlani will materialize. The choice of sporting director will be crucial for Milan’s upcoming moves in the market, and equally decisive will be the selection of the person who will sit on the Rossoneri bench next summer. Massimiliano Allegri is currently the hottest name, a long-term idea of the management, and being free from contract, he could return in June to a familiar place where he has already won in the past.

The former Juventus coach has clear ideas and well-defined tactical concepts, and he has been studying and confiding to friends about his ideas on how this team can be deployed on the field. Much will inevitably change, and much will also depend on the choices made regarding players whose contracts expire in June 2026, which will inevitably affect the starting eleven.

The central issue is that a player like Rafael Leao, if he is fit, must always be on the field. Having him as an opponent, even if he is not at his most devastating, at least forces you to use a game plan to contain him. The novelty could be his role, more central and less on the flank, where Pulisic could be free to roam, a true versatile player in the attacking midfield and a more helpful element in defensive coverage.

The real tactical doubt will be for Reijnders, who has excelled as a finisher, but is now boxed into a pure regista role. For Allegri, he could have a role like Rabiot, but to allow this, investment in the midfield is needed, seeking at least one extra holding midfielder to place alongside Fofana. This is where Allegri can play the key battle of the market.

Allegri in his career has often alternated between a 4-man defense and a 3-man line. Hypothetically, confirming Walker and adding a left-back different from Theo Hernandez if the Frenchman were to leave, a pure and more blocked 4-man line would complete a 4-3-3 that would bring the Rossoneri back to a technical project closer to Pioli’s Scudetto-winning team.

Whatever the tactical development of Milan, Massimiliano Allegri is considered the most ready coach to manage this group today, to restore a defensive organization to the team that can then enhance the team’s offensive output. Moreover, he would be a man that the fans already know and who has always faced the press and fans. In a time of great uncertainty, he would be the absolute certainty that has been lacking in this season of unsuccessful foreign projects. Will he be the final choice?
