Amorim should have sold overpaid Man Utd defender earning twice as much as Garnacho
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has completed his first transfer window at the club, making some initial changes to the squad. However, he still has significant work ahead to restore United to Premier League glory.
Amorim’s first signing was left-back Patrick Dorgu for £30 million from Lecce, addressing a long-standing issue in the full-back position. Meanwhile, Antony and Marcus Rashford departed on loan deals.
There was speculation that young winger Alejandro Garnacho could also leave, with Chelsea and Napoli reportedly interested. However, Garnacho remained at United and impressed off the bench in a recent FA Cup match against Leicester City.
While focusing on departures, Amorim missed an opportunity to offload defender Victor Lindelof, who has struggled to make an impact in recent months. Nearly eight years after his £31 million transfer from Benfica, Lindelof has fallen down the pecking order and battled injuries.
This season, Lindelof has made just nine appearances across all competitions, with only 46 minutes of playing time since Amorim’s arrival in November. Despite his limited role, Lindelof earns a reported £120,000 per week – more than double Garnacho’s £50,000 weekly wage.
With Lindelof’s contract expiring this summer, January was the final chance for United to recoup any transfer fee. His departure as a free agent will mark another expensive signing leaving the club without a return on investment.
Amorim’s failure to move Lindelof in January represents a missed opportunity to free up wages and generate funds that could have been reinvested to strengthen the squad in line with the manager’s vision.
