Ange Postecoglou should bench Pedro Porro to unleash Tottenham’s “monster” defender

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has not gone as fans had hoped a few months ago. While the club has reached the League Cup semi-finals and remains in contention for the Europa League, their Premier League form has been disappointing. Ange Postecoglou’s side currently sits in 11th place, with more losses than wins despite being the league’s top scorers.

The defense has clearly been Tottenham’s biggest problem. While injuries have played a role, some regular starters have been significantly underperforming and should be dropped for today’s match against Nottingham Forest.

Pedro Porro in particular has struggled defensively in recent weeks. Against Liverpool, he looked lost during counterattacks and was given a 4/10 rating by Spurs writer Alasdair Gold, who noted that “so many goals are conceded in his part of the Spurs box.” Porro had similar issues in matches against Rangers and Ipswich Town.

With Destiny Udogie potentially returning from injury, Postecoglou should consider benching Porro and shifting Djed Spence to right-back to make room for Udogie on the left. While Udogie has also had some struggles this season, he was nominated for Premier League Young Player of the Year last season and still ranks highly among fullbacks for key defensive and passing stats.

Ultimately, there are no perfect solutions for Spurs right now. But given Porro’s poor form and Spence’s solid play, moving Spence to the right and bringing in Udogie on the left gives the team the best chance to shore up their defensive issues while unleashing Udogie’s potential as an attacking fullback.
