Arrigo Sacchi Backs Inzaghi: “From Phenomenon to Failure in Two Weeks?”
Former AC Milan coach and Italian football icon Arrigo Sacchi has come to the defense of Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi following the team’s recent setbacks. In an interview with a sports publication, Sacchi expressed his bewilderment at the criticism directed at Inzaghi after Inter’s consecutive losses in Serie A and Coppa Italia.
Sacchi praised the wisdom of club directors who maintain their composure during challenging times. He questioned the logic of doubting Inzaghi’s abilities, given his achievements in recent seasons. The ex-coach highlighted the fickle nature of football opinions, noting that even Carlo Ancelotti faces criticism in Madrid despite his success.
Addressing Inter’s recent form, Sacchi pointed out the stark contrast in perceptions: “After the victory against Bayern Munich, Inzaghi was hailed as a genius. How can he be considered incompetent just two weeks later?” He emphasized that judging a manager based on a couple of losses is short-sighted and reminded critics that everyone is prone to errors.
Regarding Inzaghi’s rotation policy, Sacchi defended the coach’s decisions, stating that no manager intentionally sabotages their team. He acknowledged that Inter’s substitutes might not match the quality of the starting lineup but argued that this is a common issue across European clubs. Sacchi concluded by noting that when playing numerous matches, as Inter has this season, such risks in team selection are necessary.
