Arsenal may regret selling £35m star outperforming Trossard and Martinelli

Arsenal have faced some challenges recently in what has been a difficult campaign overall. After an impressive win against Manchester City, the club failed to make any signings on transfer deadline day and then suffered a disappointing loss to Newcastle United in the League Cup. To make matters worse, Gabriel Martinelli picked up an injury that could sideline him for some time.

The current form of Arsenal’s wingers Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli has been underwhelming this season. Martinelli has scored 7 goals and provided 4 assists in 35 appearances, while Trossard has 5 goals and 6 assists in 36 appearances. This equates to a goal involvement every 3.18 and 3.72 games respectively.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal academy product Alex Iwobi has been thriving at Fulham since his £35 million move in 2019. This season, Iwobi has scored 7 goals and provided 3 assists in just 27 appearances for the mid-table side. His average of a goal involvement every 2.7 games significantly outperforms both Trossard and Martinelli.

While Iwobi may not have started every game for Arsenal, his impressive form for a weaker team suggests he could have been a valuable squad option for Mikel Arteta. The Gunners may now be regretting the decision to sell the Nigerian international, who is proving to be a key player for Marco Silva’s Fulham side.

Ultimately, Iwobi’s performances this season highlight the difficulty in predicting a player’s development and serve as a reminder of the risks involved when selling academy graduates. Arsenal will hope their current crop of young talents can rediscover their form and match the productivity Iwobi is displaying across London at Craven Cottage.
