Arsenal’s Latest Academy Star Shines on England Debut
Arsenal’s Hale End academy continues to produce exceptional talent, with Myles Lewis-Skelly being the latest prospect to make waves. The 18-year-old midfielder, who has been impressing for the Gunners’ first team this season, recently made his England debut in a 2-0 victory over Albania.
Lewis-Skelly started at left-back and scored the opening goal, showcasing his versatility and skill. His performance drew praise from teammate Declan Rice, who called him “fearless” and predicted a bright future for the young star.
The teenager’s rise is reminiscent of past Hale End graduates like Jack Wilshere, Emile Smith Rowe, and Bukayo Saka. However, his journey also brings to mind another versatile academy product: Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Maitland-Niles, now 27, made his Arsenal debut at just 17 and seemed destined for greatness. However, his desire to play in midfield clashed with the club’s plans to use him primarily as a fullback. After several loan spells, he left Arsenal on a free transfer in 2023.
Now thriving at Lyon, Maitland-Niles has found success playing as a fullback, ironically. His performances in Ligue 1 have even led to calls for an England recall.
As Lewis-Skelly embarks on his own career, Arsenal will hope to avoid the pitfalls that led to Maitland-Niles’ departure. With proper management and development, the young midfielder could become a cornerstone of both Arsenal and England’s future.
