In a recent interview, Ashley Young shared the details of his surprising transfer from Manchester United to Inter Milan in 2020. The former England international explained how a personal call from Antonio Conte played a crucial role in his decision to leave Old Trafford after nearly a decade with the club.
Young, who was 34 at the time and serving as Manchester United`s captain, had six months remaining on his contract when he made the move to Italy. He initially signed a six-month deal with Inter, which was later extended for the 2020-21 season. During his time with the Nerazzurri, Young was part of the squad that clinched the Serie A title, ending the club`s 11-year championship drought.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Young revealed that Conte`s promise of a starting position was a key factor in his decision. “Conte called me personally and said, `You`re coming here to play. I want you on my team.` At 34, the prospect of regular playing time was incredibly appealing,” Young explained.
The versatile player also discussed the circumstances at Manchester United that led to his departure. With the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the presence of Luke Shaw, Young`s opportunities in the first team had become limited. “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told me that Wan-Bissaka would be playing more often at right-back, and Shaw was established on the left. I have great respect for both players, but I wanted to play regularly,” Young stated.
Interestingly, Young disclosed that Manchester United made a last-minute attempt to keep him at the club. “They offered me a new deal, but it was too late. I had already made up my mind to join Inter,” he said. “If they really wanted me to stay, they should have made the offer sooner.”
Reflecting on his decision, Young expressed no regrets. “I`m glad I made the move to Inter. We were top of the league when I arrived, and the next season we won Serie A. It was the right choice for me at that stage of my career,” he concluded.
