Aston Villa Consider Re-Signing £42m Midfielder Douglas Luiz
Aston Villa are reportedly interested in re-signing Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Juventus in the January transfer window. The 26-year-old only left Villa for Juventus last summer in a £42 million deal, but could be set for a swift return to the Premier League.
Villa manager Unai Emery is keen to strengthen his midfield options as the club pushes for a top four finish this season. Injuries to key midfielders Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara have left Villa short of depth in central areas.
Luiz was a key player for Villa last season as they qualified for European football, with his ability to control possession and dictate play from deep. His passing ability and composure on the ball could help Villa regain more control in matches, an area they have struggled with at times this campaign.
While Villa have already signed forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund this month, bringing back Luiz could prove to be their most important piece of business. The Brazilian’s familiarity with the club and Premier League experience means he could make an instant impact if he returns.
Manchester City are also reported to be interested in Luiz, who was on their books earlier in his career. However, Villa will hope their previous relationship with the player gives them an advantage in negotiations.
Re-signing Luiz for a similar fee to what they sold him for just months ago would be an expensive move for Villa. But his quality and importance to the team’s style of play could make him worth the investment as they push for Champions League qualification this season.
