Aston Villa are reportedly keen to sign a highly-rated midfielder this summer, with former CEO Keith Wyness suggesting it could be Marco Asensio. Manager Unai Emery is known to be a significant admirer of the player.
Villa’s Summer Transfer Strategy
After a busy January transfer window that saw the arrival of players like Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford on loan, and Donyell Malen permanently, Aston Villa are expected to continue strengthening their squad in the summer.
Defence is thought to be a key area for improvement, with reports linking the club to Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Villa have also shown interest in Viktoria Plzen’s Pavel Sulc, an attacking midfielder who has caught the eye this season, although they may face competition from Manchester City and Leeds United for his signature.
Despite already having options in attacking midfield such as Morgan Rogers and Asensio, the latter is only on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, making his long-term future uncertain.
However, Keith Wyness believes Aston Villa will push to secure Asensio on a permanent deal. Wyness stated that Emery has been a long-time admirer of the Spanish midfielder.
“I think they’ll push ahead and sign him, Emery has been a huge fan for many years,” Wyness commented.
“I’ve followed his career myself, I think back to when he was at Real Mallorca – that’s when he came to prominence in my mind.”
“He’s a talent, and he seems to fit the number ten role that Emery wants him to play.”
“I think they’ll do it. We know Villa will be tight, but they’ve done some clever trading around the PSR situation.”
“I expect Monchi to be the master chess player and get it done. I expect Asensio to be one of the key targets, so they’ll make it happen.”
Asensio’s Impressive Villa Start
Aston Villa’s desire to sign Asensio permanently is understandable given his impressive performances since joining on loan in January.
The £117k-per-week player recently missed a game due to injury but has otherwise been in excellent form, scoring five goals in his previous four appearances.
Labeled as ‘sensational’, Asensio has quickly become a key player for Villa, and a permanent move this summer looks increasingly likely, especially given PSG’s willingness to loan him out.
