Aston Villa remains interested in acquiring a “phenomenal” defender this summer, but they will face competition from clubs like Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, according to reports.
Emery’s Summer Transfer Plans Taking Shape
Unai Emery was active in the January transfer window, bringing in Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi on loan. It is expected that making these moves permanent will be a priority this summer.
Former Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness has mentioned Emery’s strong admiration for Asensio and anticipates a permanent deal for the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder. There are also updates regarding the potential permanent signing of Disasi.
Reports indicate that Aston Villa is eager to retain Disasi after his impressive performances since joining in January. However, they might encounter competition from other Premier League teams for his signature.

In addition to securing the loanees permanently, Aston Villa is also interested in a player they targeted in January. Reports from InterLive suggest Aston Villa is still in the running for Real Sociedad’s Jon Aramburu (via Sport Witness).
Villa made an approach for Aramburu in January but signed Andres Garcia instead. Emery’s team may try again to sign Aramburu at the end of the season.
However, there could be strong competition as Atlético Madrid, Newcastle United, and Inter Milan are also interested in the right-back, who is valued at €15m (£13m) by Real Sociedad.
‘Phenomenal’ Aramburu is a Superb Tackler
It’s evident why Villa were keen on signing the 22-year-old Aramburu before bringing in Garcia, as he excels in key defensive metrics compared to other players in his position over the past year.
Statistic | Average per 90 |
Aerials won | 1.54 (90th percentile) |
Clearances | 3.60 (91st percentile) |
Interceptions | 1.29 (85th percentile) |
Tackles | 4.26 (99th percentile) |
Aramburu’s performances for Venezuela’s national team have also been praised. Journalist Nathan Joyes highlighted his strong showing in the 1-1 draw against Brazil in November.
Despite this, considering Villa signed Garcia in January and already have Matty Cash, it’s questionable whether signing Aramburu this summer is necessary and if focusing on other squad areas would be more beneficial.
