Silvio Baldini is set to make his first appearance as the Italy Under-21 coach in a European qualifier against Montenegro. The match, scheduled for Friday at 16:15 GMT at the Stadio Alberto Picco in La Spezia, marks the beginning of a new era for the Azzurrini.
In his pre-match press conference, Baldini expressed his thoughts on the upcoming challenge: “These young players represent the best of our football system. They`ve shown great enthusiasm and eagerness to learn during our initial training sessions.”
Baldini emphasized the depth of talent in his squad, stating, “In my view, they are all first-choice players. Modern football requires not just 11, but 16 quality players for a match. We have two games ahead, allowing us to rotate and give everyone a chance to shine.”
The coach highlighted his main dilemma: “The most challenging aspect will be deciding who to leave out, as I must exclude four players from the matchday squad.”
Looking ahead to the Montenegro clash, Baldini cautioned against complacency: “Montenegro is a physically strong team that we must not underestimate. While we may have a technical advantage, it`s precisely in such situations that we risk unexpected setbacks. We`ll play our game, prepared for their likely 4-2-3-1 formation, but ready to adapt if needed.”
The Italy U21 squad has undergone recent changes, with Lecce striker Francesco Camarda withdrawing due to a head injury. Jeff Ekhator of Genoa has been called up as a replacement, marking his debut in the squad.
