Balotelli Sidelined for Genoa’s Clash with Empoli
Genoa’s striker Mario Balotelli will be absent from the team’s upcoming Serie A fixture against Empoli, which marks the beginning of the 18th round. Head coach Patrick Vieira confirmed during a press conference that Balotelli is battling the flu and remained at home today. Vieira expressed disappointment, noting that Balotelli had been training well recently.
Since joining Genoa after his stint in Turkey with Adana Demirspor, Balotelli has struggled to make a significant impact. He has appeared in six out of seven matches for which he was called up, missing only the away game against Milan. However, his playing time has been limited to brief appearances, totaling just 56 minutes across these matches. His most notable contribution so far has been hitting the post in the closing moments of the game against Napoli.
Balotelli’s contract with Genoa runs until June 30, 2025, but reportedly includes a clause allowing for early termination by either party. Despite their seemingly strained relationship, Vieira acknowledges Balotelli’s potential for improvement, especially as he gains fitness. After the Napoli match, Vieira stated, “Balotelli is doing well. Mario is training well and needs to continue in this manner.”
As Genoa faces challenges in the league, Vieira emphasized the importance of unity and commitment from all squad members during this difficult period.
