Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeanüel Belocian Sidelined for Season with ACL Injury
In a devastating setback for Bayer Leverkusen, promising young French defender Jeanüel Belocian has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a torn ACL in his right knee. The 19-year-old center-back incurred the injury during a friendly match against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on Sunday.
Belocian, who joined Leverkusen from Rennes for a reported fee of €15 million, had made an impressive start to his Bundesliga career, featuring in nine matches since his arrival. The French youth international signed a five-year contract with the German club, demonstrating their faith in his potential.
Unfortunately, Belocian’s time at Leverkusen has been marred by physical setbacks. Prior to this latest injury, he had already missed over a month of action due to an ankle problem in late October. This string of injuries has hampered the young defender’s integration into Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Despite this blow to their defensive lineup, Bayer Leverkusen remain in a strong position in both domestic and European competitions. After 16 matchdays, they sit second in the Bundesliga, just four points behind leaders Bayern Munich. In the Champions League, Leverkusen currently occupy fourth place in their group, one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund and in contention for automatic qualification to the round of 16.
The loss of Belocian will undoubtedly test the depth of Leverkusen’s squad as they pursue success on multiple fronts. The club will now look to their remaining defensive options to fill the void left by the talented French youngster as they navigate the remainder of the season.
