Bergomi Explains Conceicao’s Strategy for Benching Leao
Giuseppe Bergomi, the legendary Inter defender, has offered his perspective on AC Milan coach Sergio Conceicao’s decision to start Rafael Leao on the bench in recent matches. Bergomi suggests this move is more likely a tactical choice rather than a disciplinary measure.
For the second consecutive Serie A game, Conceicao opted not to include the Portuguese star in the starting lineup against Verona. Similar to the previous week, Leao was introduced after halftime and made a significant impact for his team.
In his substitute appearances against both Empoli and Verona, Leao contributed a goal and an assist, proving crucial in breaking the deadlock for Milan in both matches.
While some speculate that Conceicao might be dissatisfied with Leao’s attitude, Bergomi believes the manager has recognized the player’s effectiveness as a substitute and is strategically utilizing this strength.
“In my view, Conceicao isn’t punishing Leao by keeping him on the bench,” Bergomi explained to Sky Sport Italia. “He’s reserving him because when Leao enters the game, he tends to be the decisive factor. Consider the Juventus versus Inter match, where the dynamics shifted significantly in the second half.”
Bergomi added, “Milan brought on Leao to secure victories against Empoli and Verona at home. Therefore, I see it as a tactical decision to initially keep him on the bench.”
It is anticipated that Leao will be in the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Feyenoord, as Milan aims to overcome their 1-0 deficit from the first leg of the Champions League knockout play-off.
