Bundesliga to Implement Advanced Referee Technology
The German Football League (DFL) is set to introduce cutting-edge referee technology in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. Knut Kircher, Managing Director of DFB Schiri GmbH, announced that the league will adopt semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) to enhance decision-making accuracy.
In addition to SAOT, the Bundesliga is considering participating in FIFA’s experimental program that allows referees to announce VAR decisions over the stadium’s public address system. This initiative aims to improve transparency and communication with fans regarding crucial calls made during matches.
Kircher addressed the potential implementation of referee announcements, stating, “We are currently in the discussion phase of this project. We need to wait for FIFA’s results to see how this innovation is perceived and how well it functions. Naturally, we must ensure that it doesn’t negatively impact our referees.” He shared these insights during an interview with Kicker magazine.
The introduction of these technological advancements demonstrates the Bundesliga’s commitment to embracing innovation and improving the overall quality of officiating in German football. As the 2025/26 season approaches, fans and clubs alike will be eagerly anticipating the impact of these new refereeing tools on the beautiful game.
