Canadian National Team Coach Reveals Buchanan’s Desire for Inter Loan Move

Canada national team head coach Jesse Marsch has disclosed that Inter Milan winger Tajon Buchanan is actively seeking a loan move away from the Italian club this January. The 25-year-old Canadian international has struggled for consistent playing time since recovering from a tibia fracture suffered while on national team duty last July.

Marsch revealed he spoke with Buchanan recently about the situation: “We had a conversation about four days ago. He expressed his desire to go out on loan, and I believe the club is willing to work with him on that. There’s an ongoing discussion about it.”

The Canada coach emphasized Buchanan’s need for regular match action: “He’s aware he needs to be playing regularly. We were all very impressed with how he recovered from the injury. When we saw him training with Suriname, we were quite surprised. I think in the long run, the extended training period without much game time may have benefited him, but now it’s crucial that he gets consistent playing minutes.”

Marsch added: “He mentioned the possibility of staying in Italy for a loan move. I heard Ajax mentioned as well, but I’m not certain if that’s a real option. The important thing is that he plays regularly to regain his rhythm. We need Tajon at his best, continuing his development to ensure he’s one of our key players by next summer.”

Since joining Inter Milan from Club Brugge for €7 million in January 2024, Buchanan has made just 16 appearances for the Nerazzurri, scoring one goal. This season, he’s featured only six times across all competitions, totaling 135 minutes of play.

Reports from Italy suggest Serie A side Torino is among the clubs interested in acquiring Buchanan on loan for the remainder of the season. As the first Canadian to play in Serie A, Buchanan will be eager to prove himself and gain valuable playing time, whether at Inter or elsewhere on loan.
