Former Italy national team captain Fabio Cannavaro has drawn comparisons between the current Napoli-Inter title race in Serie A and the thrilling battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona during the 2006-07 La Liga season. Both competitions saw the championship decided on the final day of play.
Cannavaro, who played for both Napoli and Inter during his career, joined Real Madrid after the 2006 World Cup. He was part of Fabio Capello`s squad that dramatically clinched the La Liga title on the last day of the season, edging out Barcelona on head-to-head record after both teams finished level on points.
In the current Serie A season, Napoli and Inter are separated by just one point heading into the final round of fixtures. Both teams will play simultaneously on Friday night to determine the champion.
Cannavaro Reflects on Real Madrid Experience
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Cannavaro recalled the crucial role played by coach Fabio Capello in Real Madrid`s 2007 triumph: “Coach Capello was decisive in that experience. We were down at half-time, but he calmed us down and gave us maximum support.”
Drawing parallels to the current situation, Cannavaro added: “Napoli can rest easy in this regard: They have a leader like Conte on the bench.”
Keys to Success for Napoli
Cannavaro outlined what Napoli needs to do to secure the title: “They`ll play at home against Cagliari, who are already safe, but this means nothing. They will have to go out onto the pitch, do the simple things right and win the game. The supporters will be able to contribute a lot.”
Conte`s Future and Demands
Addressing speculation about Antonio Conte`s future, with links to a potential return to Juventus, Cannavaro commented: “Antonio is clearly an intelligent guy. He`s managed the team well, and also a club that has in recent years gone through some difficulties in terms of communication.”
He concluded: “Conte is right to ask for guarantees. He`s a coach who gives a lot, but demands just as much.”
