Celta Vigo is enjoying an excellent season on the pitch, but now, the club’s focus has shifted to an equally significant goal: a cherished piece of its history. The Galician club is hoping for a major boost at the boardroom level, centered around a priceless shirt worn by pop idol Madonna during her performance at Balaídos 36 years ago.
As part of her iconic Blond Ambition tour in 1990, Madonna graced the stage at Celta’s home ground, Balaídos, and notably donned a club jersey during her show. Since then, the Vigo-based club has been relentlessly trying to locate this unique relic. Unsuccessful in their independent search, president Marián Mouriño has now taken a bold step, reaching out directly to the pop superstar via an open letter published on the club’s social media channels.
Mouriño’s Heartfelt Appeal to Madonna
In her poignant message, Mouriño began: “Dear Madonna, I am writing to you to ask for your help with something that means a great deal to us.” She eloquently reminded the singer of her memorable performance on 29th July 1990, at Balaídos, when Madonna honored the club by wearing its sky-blue shirt.
“This beloved memory still lives among our supporters,” Mouriño emphasized. The photograph of Madonna in the Celta jersey has become a myth, an integral part of the club’s history that extends far beyond the confines of the football pitch. The president noted that while it might not have been the only football shirt Madonna ever wore on stage, this particular image has grown to shine differently over the years. The club now associates Madonna’s defiance of established norms with its own values, recognizing a shared spirit.
The letter continued, “That is why we hold on to the hope of finding the garment you once wore. This search is an act of memory, a symbol of part of the emotional heritage of our club and what it stands for.”
A Public Plea and Special Event
To further their appeal, the club has planned a special gesture: “This Friday, 6th March, we would like to send you a gesture of affection from our home, the Balaídos stadium. It will be at 8:45 PM, before the Celta – Real Madrid match, with the intention of asking you just one simple question: Do you have it? If you know where it may be, or if you would like to join us in the search to retrieve it, please contact us.”
It remains to be seen whether Madonna’s representatives will respond to Celta’s heartfelt plea in the coming days. It would undoubtedly make a remarkable statement if the pop icon were to make an appearance at Balaídos this Friday for the highly anticipated Real Madrid match.
