Champions League: Benfica Edges Monaco in Controversial Match

In a tense UEFA Champions League play-off first leg, Benfica secured a 1-0 victory over AS Monaco at Stade Louis II. The match was marred by controversy surrounding Moatasem Al-Musrati’s dismissal and a lack of clear-cut chances for both sides.

The first half saw few opportunities, with Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche forcing a save from Benfica’s goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin early on. Benfica showed promise in transition but struggled to break down Monaco’s defense.

The deadlock was broken shortly after halftime when Vangelis Pavlidis exploited Monaco’s high defensive line. The Greek forward chipped the ball past Radoslaw Majecki from a tight angle, giving Benfica the lead.

Controversy struck in the 54th minute when Al-Musrati received a second yellow card for mimicking a card-showing gesture. This decision, while adhering to the rules, was rarely seen implemented and sparked debate.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Monaco managed to limit further damage, with Majecki making crucial saves. The French side now faces an uphill battle in the return leg in Lisbon but remains hopeful of progression.

Notable performances included Majecki’s solid goalkeeping for Monaco, while Salisu’s defensive lapse led to Benfica’s goal. Al-Musrati’s dismissal was a significant turning point, leaving Monaco at a disadvantage for much of the second half.

The return leg in Lisbon will be crucial for both teams, with Monaco seeking to overturn the deficit and Benfica aiming to secure their place in the Champions League group stage.
