Chelsea could land Premier League star bigger than Garnacho

Chelsea are seeking to strengthen their attack in the January transfer window as they push for a top-4 finish in the Premier League. While the club has been linked with moves for young wingers like Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, Wolves forward Matheus Cunha could be an even more impactful signing.

Manager Enzo Maresca has guided Chelsea to fourth place at the midway point of the season, putting them in contention for Champions League qualification. However, reinforcing the squad this month could be key to maintaining that position.

The Blues have reportedly made contact with Wolves regarding a potential move for Cunha. The 25-year-old Brazilian has been in excellent form this season, registering 10 goals and 4 assists in 21 Premier League appearances. His versatility allows him to play across the forward line.

When compared to rumored target Garnacho, Cunha has significantly outperformed the Man United winger in several key attacking metrics this season:

  • Goals + Assists: Cunha 14, Garnacho 4
  • Progressive Passes (per 90): Cunha 4.5, Garnacho 1.6
  • Shot-Creating Actions (per 90): Cunha 3.9, Garnacho 3.0
  • Successful Take-Ons (per 90): Cunha 2.1, Garnacho 1.0

While Garnacho is reportedly available for around £55 million, Cunha could command a fee closer to £60 million. However, the Brazilian’s proven Premier League production and all-around attacking contributions suggest he would be worth the additional investment for Chelsea.

Signing Cunha would provide an immediate boost to Chelsea’s top-4 push and give Maresca another dynamic attacking option to complement players like Cole Palmer. Though Arsenal and Nottingham Forest are also interested, Chelsea’s financial backing could allow them to win the race for one of the Premier League’s most in-form forwards.
