Chelsea draw highlights need for new striker signing
Chelsea’s Champions League hopes took a hit after a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to relegation-threatened Ipswich Town. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the Blues struggled to convert their opportunities.
The result leaves Chelsea in 5th place, one point behind Manchester City in the final Champions League spot with just six games remaining. While manager Enzo Maresca will face criticism, much of the blame lies with the players on the pitch.
Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had another poor performance, making only two saves and completing just 64% of his passes. His distribution put his own team under pressure at times.
Up front, striker Nicolas Jackson failed to take advantage of Chelsea’s attacking dominance. The Senegalese forward had five shots but none on target, and managed only 20 touches in 87 minutes of play.
Jackson’s ineffective display highlighted Chelsea’s need to sign a clinical striker this summer. Despite the 23-year-old’s pace and work rate, his lack of end product is costing the team vital points in their top four push.
With Chelsea creating 19 shots inside the box and putting in 46 crosses against Ipswich, a more clinical forward could have turned one point into three. Owner Todd Boehly will need to invest in a proven goalscorer to complement Jackson next season if Chelsea are to challenge for Champions League qualification again.
