Chelsea Must Sell Underperforming High-Earner This Summer
Chelsea are dealing with an injury crisis up front, with first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson sidelined for up to two months. This has exposed a lack of depth in attack, with replacement Christopher Nkunku struggling to make an impact despite his hefty price tag and wages.
However, Chelsea have an even bigger problem on their hands – injury-prone defender Wesley Fofana. The Blues spent £75 million to sign Fofana from Leicester in 2022, but he has made just 35 appearances in nearly two seasons at Stamford Bridge.
Fofana’s injury record was concerning even before his move to Chelsea. He missed large portions of his final two seasons at Leicester, yet Chelsea still decided to make him one of their highest-paid players on £215,000 per week.
The gamble has not paid off, with Fofana continuing to struggle for fitness. He has made just 31 Premier League appearances across two seasons, contributing to only 3 clean sheets while making costly errors leading to goals.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca must make the difficult decision to cut ties with Fofana this summer. His exorbitant wages and lack of availability are hampering the squad. Selling Fofana would free up significant funds to reinvest in more reliable defensive options.
While injuries are often unavoidable, Chelsea took an unnecessary risk in signing a player with Fofana’s track record to such an expensive long-term deal. It’s time for the club to admit their mistake and move on from the French defender as they continue rebuilding under new ownership.
