Chelsea Target “Europe’s Hottest Striker” as Ferguson Alternative
Chelsea are exploring their options in the final days of the January transfer window as they look to bolster their attacking options. The club has been struggling for goals this season and is keen to address this issue before the window closes.
According to reports, Chelsea are showing interest in Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish international has been in scintillating form this season, scoring 34 goals and providing 7 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
Gyokeres is being considered as an alternative to Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, who has long been linked with a move to a top club. While Ferguson is seen as a promising talent, he has struggled with injuries this season and has only scored once in limited playing time.
When comparing the two strikers, Gyokeres appears to be the more complete and in-form option. The 25-year-old outperforms Ferguson in nearly every statistical category, including goals, assists, expected goals, and shot-creating actions per 90 minutes.
Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez has described Gyokeres as “one of the best signings in Europe” since his move to Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. The striker has been prolific, netting 77 goals in 83 appearances for the Portuguese club.
Chelsea may view Gyokeres as a more immediate solution to their goalscoring woes compared to the still-developing Ferguson. The Swedish striker’s physicality and finishing ability could provide the Blues with a reliable target man and clinical finisher to lead their attack.
As the transfer deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will make a move for Gyokeres or pursue other targets. However, the club’s interest in the Sporting striker suggests they are exploring all options to improve their attacking output for the remainder of the season.
