Chelsea Targets “World-Class” Defender in £68M Bid
Chelsea is looking to bolster their defensive options as they push for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification. Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the Blues need a strong end to the season to secure a spot in Europe’s elite competition.
Manager Enzo Maresca’s side started the season as one of the league’s most potent attacking forces, but has recently relied more on their defensive solidity. Chelsea has conceded just three goals in their last five Premier League matches, keeping three clean sheets.
Reports from Spain suggest Chelsea is preparing a £68 million bid for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde. The French international is seen as a key target to shore up the Blues’ backline this summer.
Kounde would bring much-needed versatility and experience to Chelsea’s defense following Thiago Silva’s departure. The 25-year-old can play as both a center-back and right-back, filling a similar hybrid role to club legend Cesar Azpilicueta.
Former Barcelona manager Xavi has called Kounde “one of the best defenders in the world,” praising his one-on-one defending and ability to neutralize top attackers like Kylian Mbappe.
While Chelsea has solid options at right-back in Reece James and Malo Gusto, Kounde’s arrival could help offset the likely departure of Trevoh Chalobah this summer. His quality and experience would be a valuable addition as Chelsea looks to return to Europe’s top table under Maresca next season.
