Chelsea Weighs Up Late £50m Move for “Superstar” Winger Better Than Garnacho
As the January transfer window enters its final days, Chelsea is still searching for an attacking reinforcement to boost their top-four ambitions. While the club has yet to make any signings this month, that could change with a new target emerging on their radar.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea is monitoring Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams for a potential late move. The 22-year-old Spaniard has a £50 million release clause in his contract, which could facilitate a straightforward transfer if triggered.
Williams has been on Chelsea’s wishlist previously, drawing interest after his performances in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. His attacking stats this season suggest he could be a more impactful signing than Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, who Chelsea has also been linked with recently.
Compared to Garnacho, Williams has registered more progressive passes, shot-creating actions, and successful take-ons per 90 minutes in league play this campaign. The Athletic Bilbao star also attempts significantly more crosses, highlighting his creativity in the final third.
Previously dubbed a “superstar” by journalist Jason Soutar, Williams appears to have the skillset Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is seeking to bolster his attacking options. With time running out in the window, the Blues may need to act quickly if they want to secure Williams’ services for the second half of the season.
Given his impressive underlying statistics and slightly lower price tag compared to Garnacho, Williams could prove to be the ideal late window acquisition to inject quality into Chelsea’s forward line as they push for Champions League qualification.
