Chelsea’s £1.7m Mistake: Selling Versatile Sancho-Cucurella Hybrid

Chelsea’s £1.7m Mistake: Selling Versatile Sancho-Cucurella Hybrid

Chelsea are approaching a crucial stretch in their season, with nine Premier League matches remaining as they aim to secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. This period will be particularly important for Jadon Sancho, whose future at the club may depend on his performances in these final games.

Recent reports suggest Chelsea could opt out of their obligation to buy Sancho permanently from Manchester United by paying a £5m compensation fee. This makes the upcoming matches even more significant for the 25-year-old winger.

Meanwhile, Chelsea may be regretting a summer transfer decision involving another young talent. Diego Moreira, sold to sister club Strasbourg for £1.7m, has been impressing in France with his versatility and production.

The 20-year-old Portuguese player has made 28 appearances for Strasbourg this season, contributing one goal and six assists while playing multiple positions. Manager Liam Rosenior has utilized Moreira as a left-back, left midfielder/winger, and even in central and right-sided roles.

Comparing Moreira’s underlying statistics to those of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Jadon Sancho reveals the youngster’s potential value. He offers creativity from both defensive and attacking positions while fitting into a high-pressing system with his tackling and ball recovery abilities.

Football analyst Jacek Kulig has praised Moreira’s performances as “superb.” The versatile player could have provided valuable depth for Chelsea, capable of filling in as an attacking fullback or natural winger when needed.

While Chelsea do have a buy-back clause for Moreira, his development at Strasbourg demonstrates the potential mistake in letting him leave so easily. Manager Enzo Maresca may regret not having a player who combines elements of both Cucurella and Sancho in his squad during this crucial part of the season.
