Chelsea’s Bargain Leader: The Free Transfer Outshining £40m+ Signings
After Chelsea’s second Champions League triumph, things went off track as Todd Boehly’s scattergun spending yielded poor results. However, signs of stability emerged last year under Mauricio Pochettino.
Now with Enzo Maresca at the helm, Chelsea are thriving as one of the Premier League’s standout sides. While not guaranteed, they look well-positioned to contend for the Conference League trophy in May 2025.
Though Chelsea’s high-priced deals have garnered attention, some of their shrewder signings under American ownership are proving invaluable. The £42.5m move for Cole Palmer can hardly be called shrewd, but Chelsea’s scouts clearly saw something worth the hefty fee for the largely untested prospect.
The loan signing of Jadon Sancho this summer was also well-structured, with a season-long loan and £25m option to buy. Elsewhere, 21-year-old Renato Veiga looks a real talent after joining for just £12m.
However, one of Chelsea’s standout stars this season arrived for even less. Tosin Adarabioyo is proving to be a fundamental part of the squad after joining on a free transfer.
Like Palmer, Tosin came through Manchester City’s youth system before finding his way to Stamford Bridge via Fulham. While not yet a Premier League mainstay, Tosin has started two of the last three top-flight matches.
His £120k weekly salary is by no means small, but not exorbitant for a free transfer to an affluent club like Chelsea. His market value has already risen to around £17m too.
Most tellingly, manager Maresca has described Tosin as “one of the leaders in the dressing room” and expressed delight with his progress. This speaks volumes about Tosin’s demeanor, tenacity and leadership – vital qualities as Chelsea push for an unlikely title challenge.
While Chelsea have downplayed title talk, it’s a real possibility given Liverpool’s flaws and dropped points from Arsenal and Manchester City. Maresca’s decision to integrate Tosin into the Premier League side regularly suggests his importance to those ambitions.
Tosin’s leadership and quality could prove the difference-maker as the business end of the season approaches. He may not be Chelsea’s flashiest signing, but he’s making a strong case as their shrewdest acquisition of the Boehly era.
