Chelsea’s New Torres: Nkunku Looking Like an Expensive Mistake
Chelsea’s woes continue as they suffered their fourth consecutive away Premier League defeat, falling 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday. The Blues failed to trouble Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, highlighting their ongoing offensive struggles.
One Chelsea player in particular is failing to live up to expectations – Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman arrived from RB Leipzig last summer for £52 million with high hopes, but has so far failed to make a significant impact.
Nkunku’s situation is reminiscent of Fernando Torres’ ill-fated move to Chelsea in 2011. Torres joined for a then-record £50 million fee but managed just 45 goals in 172 appearances for the Blues.
Like Torres, Nkunku came with an impressive goalscoring record, netting 70 goals in 172 games for Leipzig. However, he has struggled to replicate that form in England.
Injuries have hampered Nkunku’s progress, with a knee problem delaying his debut until December. But even when fit, he has failed to cement a regular starting spot or position in the team.
While Nkunku has managed 14 goals in all competitions this season, 7 of those have come in the Europa Conference League against weaker opposition. In the Premier League, he has just 3 goals and 2 assists in 18 appearances.
His Premier League statistics are decidedly average across the board. Nkunku ranks outside the top 30 players for key metrics like goals, assists, and shots on target percentage.
Unless Nkunku can dramatically turn his form around, Chelsea may be forced to cut their losses on another expensive attacking flop. Like Torres before him, Nkunku risks being remembered as an overpriced disappointment at Stamford Bridge.
