Chelsea’s Rising Star: How Reece James Surpassed a Former Academy Prospect
As England began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a victory over Albania, Chelsea fans had little to cheer about. Former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel, now leading the Three Lions, included only Levi Colwill and Reece James in his matchday squad, with neither starting the game at Wembley.
James, who came on as a late substitute, is hoping to secure a regular starting position for England. Despite recent injury setbacks, he has been gradually increasing his playing time at Chelsea. At 25, James has already made 172 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a key player and earning praise as one of the world’s best right-backs when in top form.
However, James’ rise to prominence wasn’t always a certainty. Another talented academy product, Dujon Sterling, was once considered to be on par with James in terms of potential. Sterling made his first-team debut under Antonio Conte in 2017, earlier than James, and was highly regarded by academy coaches.
Unfortunately for Sterling, he was unable to build on his early promise. While James went on to become a regular starter and eventual captain, Sterling spent several seasons on loan before leaving Chelsea on a free transfer in 2023. He now plays for Rangers in Scotland, where he has made 67 appearances.
The contrasting paths of James and Sterling highlight the unpredictable nature of youth development in football. While both were considered top prospects, James managed to seize his opportunities and establish himself as a key player for both Chelsea and England. Sterling, despite his early promise, ultimately found success away from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s academy continues to produce talented players, but James’ story serves as a reminder that potential alone is not enough. It takes a combination of skill, opportunity, and perseverance to truly make it at the highest level.
