Chiellini Regrets Past Actions, Discusses Italy’s World Cup Aspirations
Former Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has openly expressed remorse for his past behavior, particularly towards referees, and shared his thoughts on Italy’s national team as they prepare for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking at an event at Luiss University in Rome, Chiellini addressed several topics, including a controversial incident during a Champions League match against Real Madrid in 2018. The former defender admitted to feeling ashamed of his actions towards referee Michael Oliver, where he was seen making inappropriate gestures.
“I’ve made mistakes and done things I’m not proud of. The incidents with referees Oliver and Rizzoli are examples,” Chiellini confessed. “I realized my behavior was unacceptable, but at the time, I thought I was trying to assist the referee, viewing them as a fellow human being.”
Chiellini, who concluded his playing career with LAFC in the United States, hinted at a possible return to Los Angeles in the future. “I left a piece of my heart there. I’m uncertain when, but I will go back,” he stated. “For now, I’ve prioritized stabilizing my family in Turin, but I’m open to future possibilities.”
Regarding Italy’s national team and their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Chiellini expressed confidence while cautioning against unnecessary pressure. “There’s no need to add extra stress on the team. They understand the importance of returning to the World Cup stage,” he remarked. “The squad has experienced members who can guide the younger players.”
Chiellini concluded on an optimistic note about Italian football: “There’s a lot of enthusiasm and a strong desire for renewal, with players who possess both technical skills and strong personal values. Hopefully, in 16 months, we’ll all be celebrating in the United States.”
