Italian winger Federico Chiesa is poised to make his first Premier League start for Liverpool as they face Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Despite Liverpool already securing the league title, Chiesa has had limited playing time this season, featuring in only five league matches as a substitute for a total of 41 minutes.
Chiesa, who joined Liverpool from Juventus last summer, has struggled with recurring injuries in the early part of his Anfield career. The Euro 2020 winner with Italy has managed to score twice and provide two assists in 13 appearances across all competitions this season.
Tonight`s match will see Chiesa start in Liverpool`s attacking trio alongside Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. Prior to this game, Chiesa had only been in the starting lineup three times for Liverpool in other competitions, including a Champions League match against PSV in January.
Manager Arne Slot`s Perspective on Chiesa
Liverpool manager Arne Slot commented on Chiesa`s situation during a recent press conference: “Chiesa possesses the quality to play for our club, but he faces stiff competition from Mo Salah on the right wing. He could also play on the left, but that position is occupied by Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. These three players have had an outstanding season.”
Slot added, “Chiesa`s integration was hindered by fitness issues when he first arrived, putting him at a disadvantage compared to his teammates. As he regained fitness, the strong performances of others made it difficult to change the lineup. However, Chiesa certainly has the ability to succeed here.”
With this start against Brighton, Chiesa will aim to make a strong impression and potentially secure more playing time in Liverpool`s remaining fixtures.
