Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu expressed surprise at Francesco Pio Esposito`s rapid development following the young striker`s first Serie A goal. Chivu also acknowledged Cagliari`s formidable set-piece ability in Inter`s recent 2-0 victory.
The Nerazzurri successfully balanced squad rotation with tactical focus, breaking down a Cagliari side that had been on a two-game winning streak. Lautaro Martinez, returning from back issues, opened the scoring with an early header. Later, Francesco Pio Esposito celebrated his maiden Serie A goal.
Inter created numerous other opportunities, with both Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan hitting the woodwork. David Frattesi was also denied by a goal-line clearance.
Chivu`s Observations on Cagliari and Esposito
“Cagliari`s tactical shift caught us off guard initially, but their core principles remained consistent,” Chivu told Sky Sport Italia. “We managed to score early, which was crucial. Despite creating chances to extend our lead, our failure to capitalize allowed Cagliari to gain confidence. They began introducing more attackers, but we eventually secured the win, which is satisfying.”
Regarding Esposito`s performance, Chivu remarked, “It`s important to remember he`s only 20 years old with a bright future ahead. He must continue his current work ethic. While he possesses great qualities, there`s still significant room for improvement. He needs to stay grounded.”
Chivu added, “I must admit, his progress is surprising me. He plays for the team, demonstrates tactical understanding, maintains composure in front of goal, and isn`t easily intimidated. I`m pleased he scored his first goal, which may help him relax even more.”
The coach expressed concern about Cagliari`s set-piece threat: “Cagliari boasts possibly the tallest squad in Europe, so we anticipated danger from set plays. We tried to counter this by adding height to our lineup. They`re skilled at timing their runs and jumps, but maintaining a clean sheet was crucial for us.”
Chivu also praised Inter`s experienced midfield trio of Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, and Barella, while acknowledging the depth provided by Zielinski, Diouf, Frattesi, and Sucic.
Inter now turns its attention to the Champions League, hosting Slavia Prague at San Siro on Tuesday, following their 2-0 away victory against Ajax.
