AC Milan manager Sergio Conceicao has provided an injury update on the team and shared his thoughts on the disappointing season as they prepare for upcoming crucial matches.
Ahead of Monday`s away game against Genoa, Conceicao revealed that Tammy Abraham is unavailable due to fitness issues. The striker joins Warren Bondo and Riccardo Sottil on the injury list. However, Kyle Walker has returned to full fitness and is ready to play either in a back three or as a wing-back.
The Portuguese coach emphasized the importance of taking one game at a time, focusing on steady improvement. Milan`s chances of securing a top-four finish seem slim, with Europa League qualification more likely through a potential Coppa Italia victory against Bologna on May 14.
Conceicao highlighted the team`s recent tactical shift to a three-man defense, which has brought more consistency and better utilizes the strengths of players like Theo Hernandez and Alex Jimenez. He stressed the need for all players to understand their roles within the new system.
Despite the challenging season, the manager expressed confidence in key players like Hernandez and Rafael Leao, describing them as “amongst the best in the world.” He acknowledged that performances haven`t always met expectations but reiterated his faith in the entire squad.
When asked about potential rotation for the upcoming matches, including a double-header against Bologna in both Serie A and Coppa Italia, Conceicao remained coy about his selection plans. He emphasized the importance of every player, including substitutes, in achieving positive results.
The coach also addressed Milan`s defensive frailties, which have persisted throughout the season. He stressed that tactical changes alone cannot solve these issues and that continuous work on both team and individual levels is necessary to eliminate costly errors.
Concluding the press conference on a somber note, Conceicao admitted feeling regret “over everything” regarding Milan`s current league position, reflecting the overall disappointment with the team`s performance this season.
