Conte Considers Formation Change for Napoli After Neres Injury
Following David Neres’ muscular injury, Napoli manager Antonio Conte is reportedly considering a tactical shift to adapt to the Brazilian winger’s absence. Neres is expected to be sidelined for approximately one month, potentially missing crucial matches against Lazio and Inter.
Neres, who joined Napoli last summer, had effectively replaced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the left wing after the Georgian’s €70 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in January. With no natural left-winger available in the first-team squad, Conte is weighing his options.
Italian media outlets suggest that rather than deploying a fullback like Leonardo Spinazzola or Pasqualie Mazzocchi in an advanced role, Conte is leaning towards a complete formation change. The former Inter and Juventus coach is reportedly considering abandoning the 4-3-3 system in favor of a 3-5-2 setup.
This tactical shift would likely see Giacomo Raspadori partner Romelu Lukaku in a two-man strike force. If implemented, it would mark Raspadori’s first Serie A start since Napoli’s 2-1 victory over Parma on August 31.
The proposed 3-5-2 formation would allow Conte to maintain his preferred midfield trio of Scott McTominay, Stanislav Lobotka, and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. However, it would mean Matteo Politano dropping to the bench.
Additionally, there are reports that center-back Alessandro Buongiorno could make his long-awaited return to Napoli’s defense in the upcoming match against Lazio.
As Napoli adapts to Neres’ absence, all eyes will be on Conte’s tactical decisions in the coming weeks, which could significantly impact the team’s performance in crucial upcoming fixtures.
