Conte: Napoli’s Achievements Are Extraordinary

Antonio Conte has criticized the media for downplaying Napoli’s remarkable Scudetto campaign and for questioning his tactical decisions. He insists that Napoli’s current performance level is far from ordinary and deserves recognition.

With only ten games remaining in Serie A, Napoli is just one point behind league leaders Inter. They recently secured a 2-1 victory against Fiorentina at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Giacomo Raspadori.

Despite Albert Gudmundsson’s goal creating some late tension, Conte believes the victory was well-deserved. However, he expressed some dissatisfaction with the team’s conversion rate, feeling they should have scored more given the chances they created.

“It was a deserved win, but we should have scored more considering the opportunities,” Conte stated in a press conference. “We need to perform at our peak without unnecessary pressure. Similar to the Inter game, we played well and controlled much of the match, but anxiety crept in.”

Conte addressed the media’s portrayal of Napoli’s season, arguing that their achievements are being understated.

“You’re portraying what this team is doing as if it’s normal, but it’s truly not. I must emphasize this: it’s not normal,” the coach asserted.

“We have key players sidelined due to injuries, and we lost a very talented player – yet, it’s presented as if it’s just business as usual. These players are achieving something truly remarkable here.”

Following the departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and David Neres’s injury, Conte shifted Napoli’s formation from a 4-3-3 to his preferred 3-5-2 system.

He defended this tactical change in the press conference, emphasizing his track record and the need for trust in his decisions.

“The team is doing an excellent job adapting and finding solutions. I ask for your trust and the space to manage without constant suggestions to revert to 4-3-3 or other formations. Judgment should come after the final whistle.”

“Have faith in me; this group has overcome significant challenges and will continue to do so, responding strongly and covering any gaps.”

While Conte may be tempering Scudetto expectations publicly, the Napoli fans are clearly enthusiastic, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the stadium with a banner displaying ‘heart and soul’.

“Honestly, the atmosphere today deeply moved me, which is rare,” Conte admitted.

“It brings us immense joy. The Neapolitan fans have high expectations, but they also offer incredible support. We aim to keep bringing them joy and excitement, regardless of results, because the fans should always be proud of their team.”

“That would be the greatest victory for me and the team. The fans have always believed, and we must maintain that belief as well.”
