Conte Reflects on Napoli’s Tough Loss to Manchester City

Napoli coach Antonio Conte expressed disappointment after his team`s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Manchester City, citing the early red card as a turning point that completely altered the match dynamics.

The Italian side`s strategy was thrown into disarray when Giovanni Di Lorenzo received a red card just 21 minutes into the game for a mistimed challenge on Erling Haaland. This forced Conte to make an early substitution, removing Kevin De Bruyne from the field.

“It`s truly disheartening,” Conte told reporters. “We had prepared meticulously for this match, and the red card completely disrupted our plans. Facing Manchester City with 11 players is already a significant challenge; with 10, it becomes nearly impossible.”

Conte praised his team`s resilience in holding out for 56 minutes before conceding to Haaland`s header from a Phil Foden assist. Jeremy Doku later sealed the victory for City with a skillful solo effort.

The Napoli manager expressed regret at having to substitute De Bruyne so early in his return to the Etihad Stadium. “Sometimes fate can be cruel. Taking De Bruyne off was our only option at that moment, but it was unfortunate to deny him the chance to play against his former club.”

Despite the loss, Conte found positives in his team`s performance. “I`m pleased with my players` spirit of sacrifice. We leave this match with some encouraging signs for our European campaign moving forward.”

Looking ahead, Napoli will face Sporting CP in their next Champions League fixture on October 1, with Di Lorenzo suspended due to the red card.
