Kevin De Bruyne has shared insights into his decision to join Napoli as a free agent following his decade-long stint with Manchester City in the Premier League. The Belgian midfielder cited Napoli`s competitive appeal and the opportunity for a new lifestyle as key factors in his choice.
Speaking at his introductory press conference, De Bruyne addressed various topics, including being awarded Napoli`s iconic number 10 shirt, previously retired in honor of Diego Maradona.
Napoli`s Appeal Over Other Options
De Bruyne had reportedly considered offers from other European clubs, Saudi Arabia, and the United States before settling on Napoli. He explained, “Competitively, it`s an excellent opportunity. They were champions last year and demonstrated significant quality.”
The midfielder emphasized the allure of a new challenge: “It`s quite different from my experience in England, which makes it exciting. I believe I still have the motivation and ability to contribute at this level. Napoli presented the most appealing overall package.”
Balancing Competition and Lifestyle
De Bruyne reflected on his achievements in the Premier League, including six titles, but expressed readiness for a new chapter. “I`ve accomplished what I set out to do in England. Now it`s time for a fresh challenge. Napoli not only offers high-level competition but also a different lifestyle and climate.”
He added, “The club`s project, their investment plans, and the opportunity to play in Italy at a top level were all exciting factors. They`re building for the future, having already signed several new players.”
Embracing a New Experience
At 34, De Bruyne feels he can still perform at a high level and is eager to prove himself in a new environment. “This is my first experience as a free agent, which was initially stressful. However, Napoli`s project stood out among the options presented to me.”
He concluded, “While I`m not the youngest player, I believe I can make a significant contribution. I`m here to challenge myself with a new playing style and competition while also enjoying a different way of life.”
