Stefan de Vrij stated that he anticipated a challenging match for Inter against his former team, Feyenoord, in the Champions League. He emphasized that despite their victory, the Round of 16 confrontation is still ongoing.
The Nerazzurri were prepared for a difficult game at De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam, where previously Bayern Munich and their rivals Milan had suffered defeats in Champions League encounters.
However, goals from Marcus Thuram, with a skillful flick, and Lautaro Martinez, with a powerful strike, secured a 2-0 win for Inter. Additionally, Feyenoord’s goalkeeper, Timon Wellenreuther, saved a penalty from Piotr Zielinski.
The game held special significance for De Vrij, who began his professional career at Feyenoord. He received a warm reception from the home supporters, who applauded him even when he was substituted.
Inter Defender De Vrij Respects Feyenoord

“I was truly emotional and deeply thankful to the Feyenoord fans. They will always hold a special place in my heart,” De Vrij mentioned in an interview.
“I knew it would be a tough game. We lacked precision in the initial 20-25 minutes, allowing Feyenoord to perform well, although they didn’t generate significant scoring opportunities. Following our goal, we started the second half with much greater momentum. We could have extended our lead to three, while they also hit the crossbar. It’s a very positive outcome.”
Inter’s defense has been a cornerstone of their success, maintaining an impressive eight clean sheets in nine Champions League matches this season and conceding only one goal.
“We have performed exceptionally well defensively in the Champions League. Everyone contributes, which is crucial. Now, we must maintain this level of performance because this Champions League tie is still undecided,” De Vrij concluded.
The second leg is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11, at San Siro.
