De Zerbi Advocates for Kondogbia’s Contract Extension at Marseille
Olympique de Marseille has been facing defensive challenges recently due to suspensions and injuries, including that of captain Leonardo Balerdi. Geoffrey Kondogbia, formerly of Atletico Madrid and Valencia, has stepped up to fill the gap, playing primarily as a central defender in a back three despite his midfield background.
Kondogbia, speaking about his relationship with coach Roberto De Zerbi, stated, “I approach things pragmatically. I appreciate the direct communication I have with the coach.” This sentiment was expressed in a recent interview.
During a press conference, De Zerbi publicly endorsed a contract extension for the 32-year-old Kondogbia, even though his current contract runs until June 30, 2027. The coach remarked, “Kondogbia has shown great adaptability by playing out of his usual position. It would be beneficial for the club to extend his contract.”
Since joining Marseille in the summer of 2023, Kondogbia has been valued by coaches for his composure off the pitch and versatility on it, despite not being considered a star player. Originally a defensive midfielder, he has made 23 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, demonstrating his importance to the team.
De Zerbi’s comments came after Marseille’s impressive 5-1 victory over Montpellier, highlighting Kondogbia’s contribution to the team’s success.
