De Zerbi Reveals Past Interest in Bennacer Before Marseille Move
Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has disclosed that he previously attempted to bring Ismaël Bennacer to Brighton and Hove Albion during his tenure at the Premier League club. The 27-year-old Algerian midfielder has now joined Marseille on loan from AC Milan until the season’s end, with an option for a permanent transfer priced at €12 million.
During a press conference on Friday, De Zerbi expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating, “I had hoped to bring him in when Moises Caicedo departed for Chelsea. This is a significant transfer for our team. His skills align well with our playing style. Bennacer is a versatile, top-tier player and a valuable addition to our squad. He was particularly keen on joining Marseille.”
The Italian coach further explained, “We had discussions about him back in August but couldn’t finalize the deal. When Medhi Benatia informed me of the possibility to complete the transfer, we seized the opportunity immediately.”
Bennacer, who has been sidelined for much of the current season due to a calf injury, may make his debut for Marseille in their upcoming match against SCO Angers on Sunday evening.
