Emerson Royal Returns to AC Milan Training: What’s Next for the Ex-Tottenham Defender?
Brazilian right-back Emerson Royal has taken a significant step in his recovery, returning to field training with AC Milan. The former Tottenham player is expected to fully rejoin the squad next week after being sidelined since January due to a calf injury sustained during a Champions League match against Girona.
AC Milan will resume preparation at Milanello tomorrow, gearing up for their upcoming fixture against Genoa at Marassi on Monday. The coaching staff will also be monitoring the condition of Luka Jovic, who was forced to withdraw from the starting lineup before yesterday’s match in Venice due to lower back issues that emerged during warm-up.
Emerson is eager to return to action after three months on the sidelines. If his progress on the field is positive, the 24-year-old could potentially be available for selection in the final two matches of the season under manager Sergio Conceicao.
Despite being a regular starter early in the season, Emerson’s status at the club changed rapidly in December. Internal evaluations led the Milan management to consider putting the ex-Tottenham player on the transfer market. Before his injury on January 25th, a loan move to Galatasaray was nearly finalized.
Emerson Royal, who joined Milan last summer for €15 million plus €3 million in bonuses, is no longer part of the club’s long-term plans. The rapid rise of Jimenez has effectively eliminated Emerson’s chances of securing a role in the Rossoneri squad.
In the coming weeks, the club is scheduled to meet with Emerson’s agent, Stefano Castagna, to assess the situation and devise an exit strategy that takes into account the player’s period of inactivity and his impact on the club’s financial balance sheet.
