European Giants Target £83m Newcastle Star: Potential Cole-like Mistake?
Newcastle United’s record signing Alexander Isak has caught the attention of French champions Paris Saint-Germain. The Swedish striker, who joined the Magpies for £63 million in 2022, has been in sensational form, scoring 46 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions.
PSG manager Luis Enrique has reportedly identified Isak as a key transfer target, with a potential £83 million price tag. However, selling the prolific forward could prove to be a grave error for Newcastle, reminiscent of Andy Cole’s departure to Manchester United in 1995.
Cole’s transfer to Old Trafford for a then-British record fee of £8.6 million (equivalent to £123 million today) was a decision Newcastle likely regretted. The striker went on to win numerous trophies with Manchester United, including five Premier League titles.
Newcastle cannot afford to make the same mistake with Isak. The Swedish international could be crucial to the club’s ambitions of winning their first Premier League title. Losing a player of Isak’s caliber would be a significant setback to Newcastle’s long-term project under their new ownership.
While the potential transfer fee is substantial, Newcastle must prioritize their on-field success over short-term financial gain. Keeping Isak could be the key to finally achieving their Premier League dreams, just as retaining Cole might have done in the 1990s.
