Everton Eyeing Tom Cannon Return to Strengthen Forward Line
Everton suffered another defeat at Goodison Park on Wednesday, falling 1-0 to Aston Villa as David Moyes’ return was spoiled by poor finishing. The loss highlighted Everton’s ongoing attacking struggles, as they have now failed to score in 5 of their last 6 Premier League matches.
The Toffees’ offensive woes have been exacerbated by an injury to on-loan striker Armando Broja, who is expected to miss 3 months with an ankle problem. This leaves Everton desperately short of options up front.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s poor form has been a major concern, with the striker now goalless in 16 straight league games. His performance against Villa did little to inspire confidence that he can lead the line effectively.
With Everton languishing near the relegation zone and struggling for goals, Moyes is reportedly pushing to bring in attacking reinforcements before the January window closes. One intriguing option that has emerged is former Everton academy product Tom Cannon.
The 20-year-old striker left Goodison Park for Leicester City in September for around £7.5 million. However, he has impressed on loan at Stoke City this season, scoring 9 goals in 22 Championship appearances.
Everton are now said to be considering a move to bring Cannon back to Merseyside for a fee of around £10 million. The young forward’s pace, movement and finishing ability could provide a much-needed spark to Everton’s misfiring attack.
While re-signing a player they recently sold may be a bitter pill to swallow, Cannon’s goalscoring form and familiarity with the club could make him an ideal January addition as Everton look to climb away from danger. Moyes will hope the youngster can hit the ground running if a deal can be struck to bring him back to Goodison Park this month.
