Everton veterans Calvert-Lewin and Coleman set to depart as Moyes rebuilds
Despite losing to Manchester City recently, Everton have shown significant improvement under David Moyes since his return as manager in January. The Scotsman has breathed new life into the team as they prepare to move to a new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.
However, major changes to the squad are expected this summer, with up to 15 players out of contract. Two high-profile names likely to depart are striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and club captain Seamus Coleman.
Calvert-Lewin, 28, has struggled with injuries and form this season, scoring just 3 goals. With his contract expiring and Everton linked to new strikers, it seems the England international’s time at Goodison Park is coming to an end after 8 years.
Coleman, 36, has been a loyal servant since joining for just £60,000 in 2009, making over 400 appearances. But the veteran right-back has featured just 4 times this season and appears surplus to requirements under Moyes.
While Coleman’s status as a club legend is secure, his £55,000-per-week wages are difficult to justify given his lack of playing time. As Everton enter a new era, it feels like the right time for the “warrior” defender to move on.
Moyes will likely target a new right-back to compete with current first-choice Jake O’Brien as he shapes the squad in his image. For stalwarts like Calvert-Lewin and Coleman, the summer looks set to bring an end to their long associations with Everton as the club embarks on an exciting new chapter.
