Fabregas Urges Caution: Como’s Journey Just Beginning
Cesc Fabregas, manager of Como, has emphasized that the club’s ambitious project is still in its early stages, estimating they are only “25 percent” into their development. The Spanish coach stressed the importance of maintaining perspective and focus as they prepare to face struggling Monza in a crucial Serie A match.
Como, recently promoted to Serie A, find themselves seven points clear of the relegation zone. However, Fabregas is keen to keep expectations in check. “We’ve made progress, but there’s still a long road ahead,” he stated in a pre-match press conference. “Our primary goal is to secure our place in Serie A. Only then can we start thinking about raising our ambitions.”
The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder highlighted the significant step up in quality from Serie B to Serie A. “There’s no comparison with Serie B. The level of play here is much higher, and we can’t afford to take the same risks we did last season,” Fabregas explained.
Reflecting on their recent draw with Empoli, where Fabregas criticized some players for overconfidence, he emphasized the need for a reality check. “We need to keep our feet on the ground. We’ve reviewed our mistakes and I’ve been very clear with the team about our expectations.”
As Como prepare to face bottom-placed Monza, Fabregas remains cautious. “Many teams have struggled against Monza. They play good football and, like us, have fewer points than they deserve,” he noted. The coach also praised his friend Keita Balde, who has been performing well for Monza.
Looking ahead, Fabregas outlined Como’s approach: “To stay in Serie A, you don’t need to win every game, but if you’re not winning by the 88th minute, you must at least avoid defeat.” This pragmatic strategy underlines Como’s primary objective of establishing themselves in Italy’s top flight.
With the return of Nico Paz and Dele Alli from suspension, Como’s squad is bolstered for the upcoming match. However, they will be without Alberto Dossena for the remainder of the season due to injury, while Ignace van der Brempt and Ivan Azon are not fully fit.
As Como continue their Serie A journey, Fabregas’s measured approach and realistic expectations provide a solid foundation for the club’s ambitious long-term plans.
