FC Lorient Achieves Swift Return to French Top Flight
FC Lorient has successfully secured their return to Ligue 1 after just one season in France’s second division. The club, nicknamed Les Merlus, sealed their promotion with a convincing 4-0 victory over Caen, coinciding with their upcoming 100th anniversary.
The team’s ascent was confirmed when FC Metz suffered a 2-1 defeat against Pau in a simultaneous match. Under the guidance of new coach Olivier Pantaloni, who left his long-standing position at Ajaccio to lead Lorient’s promotion charge, the club has thrived with a blend of promising youngsters and experienced players.
Lorient’s impressive campaign in Ligue 2 saw them win 21 out of 32 matches. A standout performer has been 18-year-old Eli Junior Kroupi, who is set to join Bournemouth. Kroupi has netted 20 goals in 28 appearances, leading the scoring charts in the division.
The club’s success comes under the partial ownership of Bill Foley, who acquired a 33% stake in January 2023. Despite initial resistance from fans regarding the multi-club ownership model, Lorient has rebounded strongly from their previous season’s struggles in Ligue 1.
As Lorient celebrates their promotion, Paris FC sits in second place with 65 points, aiming to secure their own promotion in their upcoming match against FC Martigues.
