FIFA President Urges Italy to Qualify for World Cup, Promotes Club World Cup
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called on Italy to expedite their efforts to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, while also emphasizing the significance of the 2025 Club World Cup as a valuable opportunity for players and clubs globally.
During his attendance at the FIGC elective assembly on Monday, Infantino addressed both the Italian national team’s recent World Cup absences and the upcoming Club World Cup set to take place in the United States next summer.
“As FIFA President, I’ve overseen two World Cups without Italy’s participation,” Infantino remarked. “My message to them is simple: Pick up the pace!”
Responding to concerns raised by coaches and players, including Ballon d’Or recipient Rodri, regarding the increasing number of matches, particularly with the addition of the Club World Cup, Infantino defended the tournament’s value.
“The Club World Cup is an exceptional competition, featuring two Serie A clubs, Inter and Juventus,” Infantino stated. “It provides a global stage for clubs that rarely have such opportunities. The month-long event replaces the former FIFA Confederations Cup, offering a more meaningful experience.”
Infantino further emphasized that FIFA organizes less than 1% of worldwide football matches, suggesting that those responsible for the remaining 99% should also be considered in discussions about match frequency.
The FIFA President highlighted the tournament’s potential benefits, mentioning conversations with players like Erling Haaland and Manuel Akanji. “These talented footballers now have a chance to win a World Cup with their clubs, which also represents their countries on a global stage,” Infantino concluded.
